Data Integration tools have become vital cogs in an enterprise world dominated by the expansion of data, providing valuable means for companies collect data from outside sources. Given the complexity with how integration software has evolved in recent years, there are a wide variety of ways for enterprises to slip up and make mistakes. Successful integration allows data-driven organizations to better understand and retain their customers, support collaboration between different departments, reduce project timelines with automated development, and much more.

The more businesses lean on Data Integration solutions, the more they rely on their results. In this presentation, IBM, a market leader in this software sector, outlines nine common consequences of misusing or mishandling Data Integration. It’s crucial to sidestep these pitfalls.

In managing databases, extract, transform, load (ETL) refers to three separate functions combined into a single programming tool. Fragmentation in the legacy Data Integration market made us wonder whether or not traditional integration tools were becoming obsolete before our very eyes. With this in mind, we asked the crowd whether or not they believed Data Integration as we’ve known it was dying. To our surprise, the answer was a resounding no, and it appears that legacy tools are still being used in many verticals as enterprises prepare for the next wave in data tools.

In a recent presentation at Spark Summit EU, ING’s Chapter Lead in Analytics Bas Geerdink spoke to this very topic, recommending a migration from ETL to Apache Spark for data processing and movement. Geerdink, who is also a certified Spark developer argues that ETL has seen no real technological or market evolution like BI and the data warehouse have in recent years. ETL tools don’t seem to have a major role in the future outside of niche use cases, with this slideshow even referring to these solutions as “ETL Hell.” Make your own conclusion, and click through the presentation to learn more.

This slideshow explains how enterprise organizations are utilizing data lineage to gain transparency inside their supply chains. In this way, data lineage can provide clear-cut value to business teams and IT departments. Gaps in the supply chain can come as a result of pathways that may be blocked, leading to dead ends or lost sources. This is why it is so important for businesses to understand the entirety of their supply chains so that if changes occur at any point, end-users can validate that correct business standards, rules and compliance mechanisms have been applied.

Data Governance is much more than a stewardship process for business data, and as companies build a structure around their KPI’s and other mission-critical data, a workflow develops that revolves around the sources of that critical data. Forward-thinking organizations will do all that they can to ensure that inconsistencies are thwarted early so that the final results of the supple chain do not suffer. Inaccurate data use can have quite the negative impact of reports and conclusions.

Check out this presentation, courtesy of Viakom Krishna, VP of Engineering at SnapLogic. Data Integration is changing, and enterprises are collecting data from more sources than legacy solutions can deal with. As a result, the market has evolved, and software tools are having to change with the times.

Prior to this evolution, integration tools remained in the hands of IT departments. However, this can no longer be the case. End-users need to tools they can utilize on-demand, helping them migrate data from disparate sources to gain a single unified view. In this way, Data Integration tools should be flexible, enabling business analysts self-service functionality.

In this slideshow, the Data Integration experts themselves explain ten requirements that modern tools must posses. As you might guess, many of these requirements involve providing users the autonomy they need to answer questions when they see fit, not just when the IT department needs a question answered.

This webinar, courtesy of the folks at SnapLogic outlines the most important features that enterprise organizations should be seeking when looking for an integration platform as a service. The top features include ease of use, flexibility, functionality, and cloud-based architecture. There is additional commentary by Bryant Pham Xactly as well, one of SnapLogic’s iPaaS customers.

The presentation highlights the process Xactly endured in selecting their Integration platform, covering the challenges that currently impact enterprise integration, such as:

  • Big Data and Analytics
  • Disconnected SaaS Silos
  • API Proliferation
  • The Internet of Things

And it never happened unless Gartner has interjected, am I right? The technology research giant said of Integration Platform as a Service: “[iPaaS] is an emerging, cloud-based way for directors of integration to deliver integration platform capabilities.”

And while we fully disclose that there is some SnapLogic promotion in this presentation, there is a lot of really good information here. If your organization is on the hunt for an integration as a service platform, this may be a good place to start.

CRN Big Data 100

CRN, a technology news site, recently released their third annual Big Data 100 list, identifying vendors who have “Demonstrated an ability to innovate in bringing to market products and services that help business work with big data.” The list highlights 53 emerging vendors, all of which have launched since 2009, that are producing innovative products and making it uncomfortable for those providers that are already established in the space.

In a recent contributed post, Jean-Michel Franco, Director of Product Marketing at Talend, wrote about how big data was first seen as a way to boost business insights, but it has grown so much that it has begun to create new business models. Big data has matured at an amazing rate, and is now a cross-industry tool, used by many of the top enterprise organizations.

CRN outlines a plethora of great big data vendors, many of which we track and highlight in our free business intelligencedata integration, and backup and disaster recovery buyers guides. Some of those solutions providers include Datameer, Platfora, Actifio, and Sisense, who’s Chief Executive just wrote us an intriguing column on the topic of mobile business intelligence.

Some of the other notable up-and-comers in big data that we have started to track more closely in recent weeks are Looker Data, Sumo Logic, Numerify, and Hortonworks. In addition, two of the vendors included in CRN’s list were just named to Gartner’s 2015 ‘Cool Vendors‘ in big data report. Alteryx and Alpine Data Labs were included in Forrester‘s new big data and analytics Wave Study in April as well.

Big data’s scope is large, and there’s clearly a lot going on within the data-driven enterprise. If you are in the process of learning more about big data’s benefits or solutions vendors that can help your organization move to the next level, CRN’s list is a great place to start.

Check out CRN’s 2015 Big Data 100.
